{"id":6,"date":"2012-06-18T16:00:19","date_gmt":"2012-06-18T16:00:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/newsouth2012conference\/?page_id=6"},"modified":"2012-10-01T20:52:49","modified_gmt":"2012-10-01T20:52:49","slug":"home","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/newsouth2012conference\/","title":{"rendered":"Without Sanctuary Conference Fall 2012"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>UNC Charlotte\u2019s Center for the Study of the New South on October 11-13, 2012 is hosting \u201cWithout Sanctuary: A Conference on Lynching and the American South,\u201d in conjunction with the Levine Museum of the New South and its exhibit of photographs, postcards and narrative that explores one of the most horrific chapters of history.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cWithout Sanctuary\u201d exhibit documents hangings and other killings carried out by lynch mobs in what often became community events. The collection will be on display at the Levine Museum from Sept. 29 through Dec. 31, 2012.<\/p>\n<p>The conference will bring together scholars and community members who will consider these historical images and events and their influence today. Various sessions are scheduled at UNC Charlotte Center City, 320 E. 9<sup>th<\/sup> Street; the Levine Museum of the New South, 200 E. 7<sup>th<\/sup> Street; and First United Presbyterian Church, 406 N.
