Since Marx’s time, especially given Marx’s nods towards revolutionary change, there’s been an uneasy relationship between Marx’s critique(s) of capitalism and violence. This relationship was only heightened by the rise of different Marxisms, of repressive totalitarian regimes that invoked Marx, and of the Cold War. Relatedly, Marx also proposed strong links between capitalism and violence, analyses which were heightened by many others, oftentimes in distinct traditions and contexts. This international symposium of experts revisits this entire orbit of issues, returning, whenever possible, to Marx’s texts and views, in order better to understand the relationship(s) between violence, capitalism, and revolution in light of the present moment and its history.
