PHYS 1101: Lecture Twelve, Part One
Welcome to Lecture 12. This is our third lecture now on chapter four where we’re going over Newton’s Laws. Mostly the lecture today is going to focus on examples of problem solving and seeing Newton’s Second Law applied in different contexts.
By now I hope the ideas are solidifying for you between these quantities that I show below here. What do these quantities physically mean? How are they different? And how are they connected? That’s the velocity of an object, its acceleration, the net force on the object compared to considering only one of the forces on the object.
As usual, I’m starting the lecture out with some questions that cover previous material to just get us going and get us up to speed to prepare us for the new material. For these questions, the three questions here, I’m asking you about a physical scenario that we can all appreciate and visualize, meaning is an object at rest or not,
And then in these questions I’m asking you to tie that physical picture of what’s happening to the object to the specific terms; acceleration, net force, force, et cetera. So try your hand at these three. You’ll notice they’re worth four points it you get them correct.
