Garnett, Iris

Iris Mae Garnett was born on May 1, 1942 to parents John and Kathern Garnett in Lincolnton, GA. She was one of six children, and had three brothers and two sisters. Ms. Garnett attended West Charlotte High School and graduated in 1961. After graduation, she attended beauty school but did not finish the program. Ms. Garnett then went to work at Charlotte Douglas International Airport in food service for the planes. Ms. Garnett moved to Los Angeles, CA from 1967 to 1992, leaving her daughter, Annie White, in the care of her parents, who resided in Revolution Park. In Los Angeles, Ms. Garnett worked at a local Veterans’ hospital. Upon her return to Charlotte, she continued her work in Veterans’ hospitals until her retirement. Ms. Garnett’s parents moved to Revolution Park from Fairmount St. in 1977. Ms. Garnett visited her parents’ home at least once every year before she moved back to Charlotte from Los Angeles in 1992. Her daughter attended school in Charlotte during desegregation. Upon moving back to Charlotte, Ms. Garnett finished the payments on her parents’ home and she still resides in Revolution Park.
