Shreya Patel Named Regional Finalist in 2015 Siemens Competition!
Congratulations to Shreya Patel, a high school student working with our research group, for being named a Regional Finalist in the prestigious 2015 Siemens Competition in Math, Science, and Technology. Her research project focused on developing electrochromic devices that rely on hexacoordinate silicon. Electrochromic materials change color upon application of an electrical field. Shreya made the first working prototype of an electrochromic window that could go from colorless to different colors depending on the silicon dye that is incorporated. Shreya started high school at Lake Norman Charter School in Huntersville, NC and is currently a Senior at the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics. Check out Shreya the Science Gal‘s video on YouTube.
TAS group puts on a show for UNC Charlotte Science EXPO 2015
4/26/2015 – TAS research group members David Lee and Tina Maguylo participated in the annual UNC Charlotte Science EXPO with some flashy Combustion Chemistry demos. Green flames, thermite, and BOOMS! Be sure to come see us next year.

Schmedake Visits J. N. Fries Magnet Middle School
4/14/2015 – Tom Schmedake visited J. N. Fries Magnet Middle with two students from the Ph.D. Program in Nanoscale Science, Dawn Marin and Marissa Styron. The 150 6th graders built working dye sensitized solar cells and went outside to test them. Everyone’s cell was successful. Go, Knights!
Thank you Kathleen Epperson (J.N. Fries) for inviting us, and thank you Marissa Hartzler (statewide programs coordinator for the NC Science Festival Invitie-a-Scientist program) for helping to organize this event.
Special thanks to Walter Research Group for providing all of the materials (http://www.waltergroup.org/outreach.html).
