(1995) Geology, University of Delaware<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Profile<\/h3>\n<p>I joined UNC Charlotte in 2000 after completing my MS and PhD in Geology at the University of Delaware.\u00a0 For my first decade in North Carolina my research centered on using fossils to solve environmental problems. \u00a0The published results of this research included journal articles and book chapters concerning paleotempestology (the study of ancient storms), bioturbation (the mixing of sediments by critters), military geoarchaeology (of the barrier islands surrounding Charleston, SC) and Earth Sciences pedagogy.<\/p>\n<p>In 2004 I joined the research team in Charleston studying the most fascinating Civil War artifact I have ever seen: \u00a0The Confederate submarine\u00a0<em>H.L. Hunley<\/em>.\u00a0 My research pertaining to the submarine involves using microfossils to interpret the sediment infilling history of the vessel and provide insights into the reasons for the exceptional preservation of the crew.<\/p>\n<p>This interest in the relationship between geology and the American Civil War is reflected in my current research agenda and publications. \u00a0In addition to several recent journal articles on the geology of Civil War battlefields and landscapes, I have also completed my first three books. The first,\u00a0<strong><em>Rocks and Rifles: The Influence of Geology on the Combat and Tactics of the American Civil War<\/em><\/strong>, is intended for audiences interested in either American history or geology (or, hopefully, both) and was published by Springer-Nature in 2019.\u00a0<strong><em>Myths of the Civil War:\u00a0The Fact, Fiction, and Science behind the Civil War\u2019s Most-Told Stories<\/em><\/strong> (2021), uses mathematics and physics to shatter many of the most cherished and oft-repeated stories from the American Civil War.\u00a0 My most recent book is <strong><em>Sand, Science, and the Civil War:\u00a0 Sedimentary Geology and Combat<\/em><\/strong>, was published by the University of Georgia Press as a part of their <em>UnCivil War<\/em> Series.\u00a0 This book has gained significant attention and was named one of the top ten books of 2023 by <em>Civil War Books and Authors<\/em>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Teaching and Research Interests Environmental Micropaleontology Geoarchaeology Coastal Geology Military Geology Education Ph.D. (2000) Geology, University of Delaware M.S.
