Courses

Earth Science 1101 – Physical Geography  

Geographical principles and processes in physical geography and the earth sciences: geographic locational methods, earth-sun relationships, earth radiation balance, atmospheric temperature and pressure, the hydrologic cycle, soil, climate systems, ecosystems and biomes.

Meteorology 1102 – Introduction to Meteorology

A first look at various aspects of meteorology, including solar radiation, temperature, pressure and wind, stability, global circulations, precipitation processes, weather systems, severe weather, and current environmental issues. Basic physical principles, meteorological terminology, societal impacts, weather analysis and career options within the field of meteorology are explored.

Meteorology 3140 – Fundamentals of Meteorology  

Prerequisite: ESCI 1101/1101L, or permission of instructor. Fundamental physical principles of weather and climate. Analysis of short and long term atmospheric behavior are introduced. Topics include solar radiation, temperature, moisture,
wind and pressure, synoptic systems, regional climates, paleoclimates, climatic change, and applied climatology.

Meteorology 3330 – Weather Forecasting

In METR 3330, students learn different forecasting techniques for both short, medium and long range periods.  Verifications and ‘postmortems’ are conducted after each forecast.  A daily weather blog is also run and commented on by students for all seven days for the Charlotte area.

Meteorology 3245 – Synoptic Meteorology 

Prerequisite: METR 3210 with a grade of C or above, or permission of instructor. Principles of meteorological analysis; fundamental concepts of meteorology, thermodynamics, and kinematics are integrated to understand the structure and evolution of mid-latitude cyclones and fronts.

Meteorology 3245L – Synoptic Meteorology Lab  

Must take concurrently with METR 3245.  Lab takes the synoptic concepts from lecture and puts them into an applied setting.  Students will learn contouring of maps, map analysis, upper level and surface features, soundings, computer models and forecasting.

ESCI 4600 – Earth Science Seminar (O) – Oral communication

Advanced seminar series examining one of the Earth Systems.  Course work consists of a series of independent presentations.  The course is designed for Earth Science, Geology, and Meteorology majors with a senior standing.
