Here is a list of some of the conjunctive adverbs that you may run into: <\/span><\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td colspan=\"3\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><b>Conjunctive Adverbs<\/b><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">accordingly<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">also<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">besides<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">consequently<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">conversely<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">finally<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">furthermore<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">hence<\/span><\/td>\n<td style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">however<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">indeed<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">instead<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">likewise<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">meanwhile<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">moreover<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">nevertheless<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">next<\/span><\/td>\n<td>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">nonetheless<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">otherwise<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">similarly<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">still<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">subsequently<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">then<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">therefore<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">thus<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>&nbsp;<\/td>\n<td>&nbsp;<\/td>\n<td>&nbsp;<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You might be feeling like \u201cWhat!?\u201d but I am going to show you how to use them. As I said before, the job of a conjunctive adverb is to connect two clauses of a sentence to one another. It should look like this:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Clause 1; Conjunctive Adverb, Clause 2<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Please note that you MUST use a semicolon after clause one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/unccwrc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/726\/2017\/06\/image1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-372 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/unccwrc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/726\/2017\/06\/image1-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/unccwrc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/726\/2017\/06\/image1-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/unccwrc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/726\/2017\/06\/image1-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/unccwrc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/726\/2017\/06\/image1-120x120.jpg 120w, https:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/unccwrc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/726\/2017\/06\/image1-324x324.jpg 324w, https:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/unccwrc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/726\/2017\/06\/image1.jpg 335w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Here is are some example sentences that uses conjunctive adverbs:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I would really like to go shopping; however, I do not have any money.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> #collegeprobs<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I need to harvest all these turnips; furthermore, the cows need to be milked.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> #farmerlife<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Prepositional Phrases:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Another tricky grammatical concept is the prepositional phrase. You might be trying to figure out what a prepositional phrase is, furiously googling it like this cat, but I\u2019ll save you some time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/unccwrc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/726\/2017\/06\/image6.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-375 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/unccwrc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/726\/2017\/06\/image6.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A prepositional phrase is a preposition, its object, and any modifiers between them. &nbsp;For example: through the looking glass; \u201cthrough\u201d is the preposition, \u201clooking glass\u201d is the object, and \u201cthe\u201d is the modifier.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A preposition is a word that indicates location, such as in, around, or through. The object of a preposition is the noun or pronoun that the preposition is talking about. A modifier is a word, phrase, or clause that provides description in a sentence. Prepositional phrases generally look like this:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Preposition + Noun, Pronoun, or Clause<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For example: over budget; \u201cover\u201d is the preposition and \u201cbudget\u201d is the noun.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Preposition + Modifier + Noun, Pronoun, or Clause<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For example: through the spooky forest; \u201cthrough\u201d is the preposition, \u201cthe spooky\u201d is the modifier, and \u201cforest\u201d is the noun.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Here are a couple example sentences with prepositional phrases in them:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Amy can\u2019t move because of all the squats she did at the gym yesterday.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> #beastmode<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Jessie learned how to use prepositional phrases in the Writing Resource Center.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> #GOALS<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Now, go and write using ALL the conjunctive adverbs and prepositional phrases!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/unccwrc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/726\/2017\/06\/image3.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-376 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/unccwrc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/726\/2017\/06\/image3-300x168.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/unccwrc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/726\/2017\/06\/image3-300x168.gif 300w, https:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/unccwrc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/726\/2017\/06\/image3-120x67.gif 120w, https:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/unccwrc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/726\/2017\/06\/image3-324x181.gif 324w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And remember, if you need more clarification or just want to practice using conjunctive adverbs and prepositional phrases in your writing, stop by the Writing Resources Center!
