You are invited to participate in a study being conducted by the WISH Lab in the Department of Psychological Science at UNC Charlotte (Director: Dr. Tierney Lorenz). The purpose of this study is to gather information about sexual health and wellbeing in young adults, and to see if there are differences in young adults who have vs. have not had significant mental health histories, and who have vs. have not used antidepressant medications. The survey should take approximately 90 minutes to complete.
PARTICIPATION
Your participation in this survey is voluntary. You may refuse to take part in the research. You may skip any question you do not wish to answer for any reason.
UNCC Psychology Students: If you are completing this study through the Department of Psychological Science’s research pool (SONA), you will receive 1 research participation credit for taking part in the study. You may write a three-page research paper, or participate in a different experiment, if you prefer not to participate in this study.
Amazon Turk participants: If you are completing this study through Turk Mechanical, you will receive $3 via your Turk account.
Other participants: If you are a community participant, you may choose to be entered into a monthly drawing for a $20 Amazon.com gift card.
You may exit the survey at any time without penalty. However, in order to maximally protect your confidentiality, we do not collect any identifying (contact) information during the survey. At the end of the main body of the survey you will be redirected to another survey where you may enter your contact information to receive credit (SONA/Turk credit/entry into the drawing). If you choose to exit the survey before the end, you will need to email us at unccwishlab@gmail.com to indicate you wish to be credited.
BENEFITS & RISKS
You will receive no direct benefits from participating in this research study. However, your responses may help us learn more about sexual health in young people with mental health histories. This is the first study to examine how antidepressant use as a child/adolescent may impact sexual health in adults, and the data from this study may help doctors better inform their patients about possible benefits and risks of taking antidepressants.
The possible risks or discomforts of the study are minimal. You may feel a little embarrassed or uncomfortable answering personal questions about your sexuality or mental health history. We will ask about the following topics: demographics, sexual life history (including experience, history of sexual dysfunction, and age of sexual debut), relationship history and satisfaction, current sexual function (including sexual desire and satisfaction in sexual relationships), sexual self-schema, sexual health (including use of contraception and history of sexually transmitted infections), sexual knowledge and education, mental health history (including history of mood and anxiety disorders, trauma, and substance abuse history), physical health history, antidepressant use, and reproductive health.
There is always the risk of compromising privacy and confidentiality when using the internet. However, the risk to your physical, emotion, social, professional or financial well-being is considered to be less than minimal.
CONFIDENTIALITY
Your survey answers will be stored initially with Qualtrics in a password protected electronic format. Data will later be downloaded and stored in a password protected file on an encrypted shared drive. Your survey responses will be kept separately from your contact information, and we will keep your contact information only as long as necessary to award credit for participation.
