STUDENT SUBMISSIONS + CONTESTS
Note: When submitting, always read the guidelines carefully; every journal and contest has its own needs and requirements. Pay attention to deadlines, page limits, formatting, simultaneous/multiple submissions, and more.
- Check out the New Pages Guide: Publications for Young Writers. Lists journals for undergraduates and younger writers. They also compile a list specifically of journals run by undergraduates: Undergrad Lit Mags . Here is the page specifically for North Carolina.
- Poets & Writers is a great resource not only for a listing of literary magazines but for all things writing.
Fall
Nova Literary Arts Magazine, UNC Charlotte’s student-run journal, deadline usually in November.
Spring
- Charlotte Writers’ Club contests: The Elizabeth Simpson Smith Short Story Contest and the CWC Poetry Contest
- Atlantis Magazine at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington accepts creative work only from undergraduate and graduate students in the state of North Carolina.
- Portals Literary Arts Magazine from Cape Fear Community College
- MSU Denver’s literary journal The Roadrunner Review is open for submissions from students and others from Feb. 7-April 12.
