Creative Writing Opportunities

EVENTS

Charlotte Center for Literary Arts is a great place for finding literary events, classes, and many other resources and opportunities, as well as joining a vibrant literary community. Student memberships available. You can also sign up for their newsletter.

The North Carolina Writers’ Network offers a number of resources and opportunities.

STUDENT SUBMISSIONS + CONTESTS

Note: When submitting, always read the guidelines carefully; every journal and contest has its own needs and requirements. Pay attention to deadlines, page limits, formatting, simultaneous/multiple submissions, and more.

  • Check out the New Pages Guide: Publications for Young Writers. Lists journals for undergraduates and younger writers. They also compile a list specifically of journals run by undergraduates: Undergrad Lit Mags . Here is the page specifically for North Carolina.
  • Poets & Writers is a great resource not only for a listing of literary magazines but for all things writing.

Fall

Nova Literary Arts Magazine, UNC Charlotte’s student-run journal, deadline usually in November.

Spring

  • Charlotte Writers’ Club contests: The Elizabeth Simpson Smith Short Story Contest and the CWC Poetry Contest
  • Atlantis Magazine at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington accepts creative work only from undergraduate and graduate students in the state of North Carolina.
  • Portals Literary Arts Magazine from Cape Fear Community College
  • MSU Denver’s literary journal The Roadrunner Review is open for submissions from students and others from Feb. 7-April 12.
