Technology and Relationships Among Young Adults

This research study examines how young couples communicate about and even participate in risk behavior (e.g., substance use, sexual activity) via text messages. This study involves capturing and storing your text messages with your romantic partner for the past 6 months using secure software and completing an online survey.

What you will do: Participation in the study typically takes approximately 70 minutes to complete and is entirely confidential. The primary purpose of this study is to examine what risky health behavior (e.g., substance use, sexual behavior) is communicated about on a digital platform (i.e., text messages). Secondary interests involve examining a variety of other health behaviors (e.g., depression, anxiety) and what they look like when communicated via text messages. These secondary interests will be examined using non-identifiable data shared with approved researchers.

Who can be in the study: To participate in this study, you must be (1) in a heterosexual relationship, (2) females: young minority female (e.g., Black/African-American, Hispanic, American Indian, Asian, and/or Pacific Islander), (3) females: 18-25 years old; males: at least 18 years old at the time of the study, (4) both members of the couple report being in a romantic relationship with each other for a maximum of 6 months, (5) report sexual activity within the relationship in the past 6 months, (6) speak English, and (7) one member of the couple owns an iPhone.

Compensation: You and your partner will each receive $20 for participation in this study.

If you and your partner are interested in the opportunity to participate in this study, please email uncchealthbehaviorchangelab@gmail.com to learn more and see if you are eligible to be in the study.
