The History Learning Community is a one-year program that offers small-group learning in a large university setting. It is designed to accelerate and enhance academic performance with hands-on experiences in history. It also helps to build community and solidarity among students in the major.
The learning community is built around a two-course sequence taught by me If you choose to join you would take: Fall and then HIST 2000- Labor vs. Capital: Class Conflict in American History and then a class in the Capitalism Studies minor in the Spring. The themes in these classes will be helpful and insightful even if you aren’t interested in studying American history. These classes will also fulfil your Prospect for Success freshmen requirement which is important for your degree completion.
If you join you will also get:
-Preferential registration for additional history electives.
-Dedicated year-long academic advising/mentoring/planning.
-All-expenses paid field trips and exploration opportunities around campus and the city of Charlotte.
-The opportunity to build relationships with a group of highly motivated students like yourself.
-Democratic control of the direction of the learning community during your year long membership.
Previous HLC members report higher satisfaction in their course and learning experience, outscore their peers on GPA and time to completion data, are more likely to pursue honors and less likely to drop out of college; and form tight friendships that carry through the remaining college years and beyond.
