Getting to know the Krueger Research team-Fall2022
We are a powerhouse group of primarily female graduate and undergraduate (and sometimes high school) students, each of whom harbor a passion for scientific research. We all want to learn how to properly prepare samples and buffers, collect and analyze data, and effectively communicate our results, trials and questions with one another and the larger scientific community. I hope that you find this website useful in your quest to find out about the research conducted in the Krueger Research group. Students who have the commitment and passion to join our team are invited and encouraged to stop by the laboratory to introduce yourself and/or to attend a scheduled group meeting or two. Caroline was a post-baccalaureate UG researcher who recently joined the Master’s program in Chemistry and will be working on characterizing the relationship between Lithium ions and the formation of DNA quadruplexes upstream from the serotonin uptake receptor gene. |
Bianca Avram | Structural studies of Insulin Amyloid Fibrils |
Bianca is a senior BS Chemistry Honors student with a minor in Biology who plans to apply to our early entry Masters program this Spring. She is interested in studying the aggregation phenomena of Insulin using a fluorescence assay she is developing in our lab. |

She is working with Caroline West, optimizing the chemistry department’s Circular Dichroism instrument to identify nucleic acid chiral microenvironments. Ryan received his Ph.D. at the University of Virgina in the Spring of 2014. He post-docHe recently accepted a Research Scientist position at Novo Nordisk in the Copenhagen Area, Denmark where he lives along with Heather Sullivan (*10) who is passionate about cleaning up plastic rafts in our oceans and received her Ph.D in environmental science at UVA.

Toward a Structural Understanding of the Viral Entry Mechanism of HIV-1
Chris received his Ph.D from the University of Florida in Gainesville in 2014. He was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Harvard Medical School in Boston, where he met his current wife, Ashley White. Together, they have a son, Abraham. After a second post-doc at Texas A&M University, Chris has accepted a position as a Research Scientist at Xtal BioStructures, Inc. in Natick, MA.

Matt earned his M.D. at the Brody School of Medicine of East Carolina University and is currently an Attending Physician at Bon Secours Richmond Health System after completing his residency at VIDANT Medical Center near Greenville, NC. He lives in Midlothian, VA with his wife, Olga Paine, whom he met while at UNC Charlotte, and their two children.

Gosia has been working as a Research Scientist in local industries since leaving UNC Charlotte. Most recently, she accepted a position at Thermo Fisher Scientific in Greenville, NC. She has also worked for Polpharma Biologics in Poland, MedImmune in Cambridge, UK and Actavis (now Allergan) in Lincolnton, NC.

Jon is currently a Research Associate II at Genentech in South San Franscisco. His former positions include working at Pfizer in San Franscisco and SillaJen in Korea. Immediately after leaving UNC Charlotte, He worked as a Research Technician at John Hopkins and in a muscle protein research group at the University of Maryland in Baltimore.

For several years after graduating from UNCC, Paul was a Science teacher at Jordan HS and then Durham school of the Arts. In 2007, he left the teaching profession to purse an Nursing degree specializing in Anesthesia at Chapel Hill. He currently works as an RN for the North Carolina Health Care System.
