Press release on INDUCTION INTO SIGMA DELTA PI’S ORDEN DE DON QUIJOTE. On Saturday afternoon, May 1, 2021 during a special Zoom event organized by Sigma Delta Pi, the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society, Dr. Michael Scott Doyle, Professor of Spanish in UNC Charlotte’s Department of Languages and Culture Studies was inducted into the Order of Don Quijote, Sigma Delta Pi’s highest award that is conferred annually upon only 1-3 people worldwide. Professor Doyle’s exemplary record of scholarship and professional contributions have earned him this international distinction. Past inductees include renowned literary figures such as Carlos Fuentes, Carmen Laforet, Fernando Arrabal and Camilo José Cela, among other highly accomplished literary artists and scholars. Dr. Michael S. Doyle is an Emeritus Professor of Spanish, Business Spanish and Business Language Studies, and Translation Studies at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. During the 2013-2014 academic year, Dr. Doyle served as a Distinguished Visiting Professor of Spanish at the United States Air Force Academy (DVP-USAFA). To date, Dr. Doyle has 106+ publications in print (85 single-authored), among them 16 books (7 co-authored textbooks and 7 co-authored workbooks, with Doyle as lead author; 1 literary translation published by Columbia University Press; and 1 guest-edited monographic volume); 8 book chapters; 38 articles and essays (or equivalent); 1 case study (which has had 883 downloads since 12/12/16, https://commons.emich.edu/gabc/vol5/iss1/5/); 7 interviews; 1 edited proceedings volume; 11 translations (short-story length); a 15-segment video (15 individual videos scripted and edited over three filming dates in 2001 [also directed in Fort Worth], 2010 and 2013); 1 audio podcast; and 7 reviews (2 substantive); 71 conference presentations; 72 invited lectures, panels, and keynote addresses; and 65 workshops, the majority co-sponsored by the federally-funded Centers for International Business Education and Research (CIBER), at professional conferences and institutions of higher learning. He has taught 46 different classes in the fields of Spanish and translation studies. Dr. Doyle has provided 23 years of administrative service: 9 as department chair, 3 as undergraduate coordinator, 11 as graduate coordinator, and one as Faculty Director of the North Carolina Semester in Spain (SIS) Consortium Program in Santander (fall 2017 and spring 2018). He was the initiating organizer and co-chair of the 5th International Symposium on Language for Specific Purposes (ISLSP) and Centers for International Business Education and Research (CIBER) Business Language Conference hosted by UNC Charlotte on March 5-7, 2020 (https://languages.uncc.edu/ISLSP-CIBER).
