Current Project
Currently working on the theoretical underpinnings of the early days of the Bureau of Educational Experiments — psychological, anthropological, sociological, and educational. In particular, I am tracing how early assumptions of what we now would call cognitive science shaped early works in the tradition of Lucy Sprague Mitchell’s Here and Now Story Books, with particular emphasis on Mitchell, Margaret Wise Brown, and Dorothy Meserve Kunhardt. There will be a sideline on Gertrude Stein because of some intriguing parallels, and a concluding chapter on reverberations up to the current century (with another sideline on Theodor Seuss Geisel).
