Welcome!

Sign up here for the study! Thanks so much for visiting our website to learn more about our research and our current studies. Please click on the tabs above to learn more about the principal investigators and the research team. We are interested in understanding the role of social media in transmitting information in society, and bring to bear research perspectives from public policy, political science, psychology, computer science, and communications. We launched the current study to explore how people react to shocking events on social media. We are interested in how people make meaning of events, how they engage or disengage from social media, and why they choose to post or not post on their own social media accounts. The broader purpose of the study is to understand the role of social media in society, including how and why information spreads on social media following unexpected events. We are currently recruiting participants for interviews and focus groups to help us understand how they use social media. This research has been approved by the Institutional Review Board of UNC Charlotte under protocol number 18-0333.   You may be eligible to be a participant in an interview or focus group if you meet the following minimum qualifications and additional criteria on this screening survey:
  • Age 20 or older by September 1, 2018
  • Used some form of social media during the time of the protests (September 2016, which is the month of the Keith Lamont Scott shooting)
  • Resident of Charlotte, or lived within one hour of Charlotte, during September 2016
If you have questions, free to reach out to us at sms-study@uncc.edu. Sincerely, Dr. Cherie Maestas Marshall A. Rauch Distinguished Professor of American Politics Department of Political Science and Public Administration University of North Carolina, Charlotte
