Jeff Balmer is an Associate Professor at the School of Architecture. He completed his Bachelor of Environmental Studies (1989) and Bachelor of Architecture (1992) from the University of Waterloo, and a Master of Architecture from Iowa State University in 1998. His scholarship engages beginning design education and includes a focus on the history and practice of the architectural diagram, and his current research focuses on Italian modernist architecture. His teaching focuses on beginning design, writing for architects, and history, including “from Auschwitz to Zapruder: Mapping the Midcentury” – an advanced seminar in Postwar cultural history. He has led international study abroad programs for more than 25 years.

In 2018, he published the second edition of ‘Diagramming the Big Idea: Methods for Architectural Composition’ with colleague Michael Swisher (Routledge Press).

In 2018, Balmer inaugurated the SoA’s annual study abroad program in Rome, providing Fourth Year undergraduate students with a capstone experience in their final semester before graduating.
