Margarette Joyner
Visiting Assistant Professor of Costume Design Margarette Joyner is a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). She is the founder of The Heritage Ensemble Theatre Company in Richmond, VA, the only African American theatre company in the city. For six years she taught theatre at Virginia Union University (HBCU), where she was a department of one. She also served as an adjunct at VCU, where she taught Effective Speaking.
Ms. Joyner has worked in costume shops in New York, New Mexico, Miami, and Alabama and is currently the resident costume designer for Cadence Theatre in Richmond. She has worked with critically acclaimed designers such as William Ivey Long, Willa Kim, and many others. Ms. Joyner is not only a costume designer, but she is also a director, actress, singer, and published author. Her play, Message From an Ancestor was recently accepted into the Reader’s Theatre at the 2022 National Black Theatre Festival.
