The Microsoft Office Suite is installed by default on all UNCC computers running Windows or MacOS. To download the suite for home or privately owned computers, check the UNCC software page.
NetCDF
NetCDF (Network Common Data Form) is a set of software libraries and self-describing, machine-independent data formats that support the creation, access, and sharing of array-oriented scientific data. Data in NetCDF format is:
- Self-Describing. A netCDF file includes information about the data it contains.
- Portable. A netCDF file can be accessed by computers with different ways of storing integers, characters, and floating-point numbers.
- Scalable. Small subsets of large datasets in various formats may be accessed efficiently through netCDF interfaces, even from remote servers.
- Appendable. Data may be appended to a properly structured netCDF file without copying the dataset or redefining its structure.
- Sharable. One writer and multiple readers may simultaneously access the same netCDF file.
- Archivable. Access to all earlier forms of netCDF data will be supported by current and future versions of the software.
NetLogo
NetLogo is a multi-agent programmable modeling environment software. It is designed to teach programming concepts using symbols in the form of turtles, patches, and the observer. NetLogo is for students and professionals with no programming background. It is available on Windows and Mac devices.
Octave
GNU Octave is a high-level language, primarily intended for numerical computations. It provides a convenient command-line interface (CLI) for solving linear and nonlinear problems numerically, and for performing other numerical experiments using a language that is mostly compatible with MATLAB.
Physlet Physics
Physlet Physics are free physics applets and it’s free for non-commercial use. It’s made from the same team that makes Open Source Physics Project. Over 2,00 individual exercises have been created on Physlet. The applets create simple graphics to demonstrate the salient features of physical phenomena. Physlet Physics runs on Windows, Mac, and Linux devices.
Origin Pro
Origin is a proprietary computer program for interactive scientific graphing and data analysis. It is produced by OriginLab Corporation, and runs on Microsoft Windows. It has inspired several platform-independent open-source clones like QtiPlot or SciDAVis.
Graphing support in Origin includes various 2D/3D plot types. Data analyses in Origin include statistics, signal processing, curve fitting and peak analysis. Origin’s curve fitting is performed by the nonlinear least squares fitter which is based on the Levenberg–Marquardt algorithm.
Origin is primarily a GUI (Graphical User Interface) software with a spreadsheet front end. Unlike popular spreadsheets like Excel, Origin’s worksheet is column oriented. Each column has associated attributes like name, units and other user definable labels. Instead of cell formula, Origin uses column formula for calculations.
MathCad
ParticleFlow
ParticleFlow is a two dimensional modeling software. This software, along with TopoDrive, are meant to simulate two groundwater processes: topography-driven flow and transport of fluid particles. It helps the user to better understand and determine groundwater flow processes.
Mathematica
Mathematica is a mathematics software program used to help with science, math, and engineering fields. It can be used for industrial work, or for educational purposes. It allows integration of computation to many different types of fields and work flows.
