Media and public communication
I am happy to speak to journalists on weather and climate issues, time permitting. In 2024 I appeared on a Charlotte Talks panel on WFAE (Charlotte NPR) to discuss recent and upcoming climate change effects in North Carolina, and was interviewed by Spectrum News on the shrinking duration of cold snaps in Charlotte. In 2023 I contributed to a WFAE story on Charlotte’s first snow-less winter and a WITN (Greenville, NC NBC TV) story on record summer heat. In 2022 I appeared on another WFAE Charlotte Talks panel, and served as a source for a Carbon Brief article on the expansion of high pressure in Western Europe.
I also enjoy outreach to community groups on topics relating to climate change, weather, and the environment. In 2023 I presented on climate change for DavidsonLearns / Davidson Senior Scholars and for Mecklenburg Community Support Services. Prior to the Covid-19 pandemic I presented on climate change for Sun City Carolina Lakes, Charlotte’s Plaza Midwood Library, St. John’s Lutheran Church, and San Francisco’s South Park Commons entrepreneurial hub.
Professional and departmental service
I am an active member of the American Meteorological Society (AMS) and American Geophysical Union (AGU). I regularly co-organize topical sessions at AGU’s annual Fall Meeting as well as larger, dedicated workshops, such as a Carnegie Research Workshop on continental climate change theories in Scotland in June 2022. In our department, I serve on the Graduate Advisory Committee and the Communication & Outreach Committee. I also peer-review several climate articles per year for leading journals.
